Ultrasound
examination, also called a sonogram, is routinely performed prior to
amniocentesis. This is necessary to confirm the stage of pregnancy and to allow the
physician to select the best site for the amniocentesis, avoiding the fetus and
placenta. Some fetal abnormalities can be detected by ultrasound, but many cannot.
Occasionally there are situations in which more than one ultrasound is required. |
